The USA Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Christopher J. Lamora, recently met face-to-face with His Royal Majesty Fontem Asabatong, hearing firsthand the harrowing stories of a displaced people. The ongoing socioeconomic and political crises that have gripped Cameroon since 2017 have led to unprecedented humanitarian suffering among the English-speaking Cameroonians, particularly in the Lebialem division.
His Majesty the Fon of Fontem, along with the Lebang Cultural and Development Organization (LECUDO), invited Ambassador Lamora to visit the displaced Lebang people residing in the nearby city of Dschang in the Western Region of Cameroon. Despite the short notice and heavy rains, over 700 people gathered at the Dschang Grandstand on June 28 to share their stories.
The Gathering of the Displaced
The event began with a welcome song composed by the Lebang women, followed by speeches from His Majesty the Fon of Fontem, the Lord Mayor of Menji Rural Council, the President General of LECUDO, and finally the Ambassador. The Fon emphasized the importance of the Ambassador hearing the personal stories of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) themselves.
One particularly poignant story came from an elderly woman who had struggled to hire and cultivate a piece of land, only to be prevented from harvesting her crops by the very landlord to whom she had paid money. Another story from a young girl revealed her heartbreaking turn to survival sex as a means to support herself after fleeing her village.
The Ambassador's Response
The Ambassador listened intently to these and other testimonies, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to hear their stories and promising to take their experiences back with him. The event highlighted the resilience and strength of the Lebang people, who despite their circumstances, remain proud and determined to rebuild their lives.
The Ongoing Conflict
This visit not only brought attention to the plight of the Lebang people but also underscored the critical need for ongoing support and a resolution to the conflict that has torn their lives apart. The socioeconomic and political crises that have plagued Cameroon since 2017 have had a devastating impact on the English-speaking regions, particularly the Lebialem division, where the Lebang people reside.
The conflict, which has its roots in the country's colonial history and the ongoing tensions between the French-speaking and English-speaking regions, has led to widespread displacement, violence, and human rights abuses. Thousands of people have been killed, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in nearby cities or across the border in Nigeria.
Supporting the Lebang Community
The Lebang people, like many other displaced communities in Cameroon, have faced immense challenges in rebuilding their lives. They have lost their homes, their livelihoods, and in many cases, their loved ones. Yet, despite these hardships, they remain resilient and determined to reclaim their rightful place in Cameroonian society.
The visit by the US Ambassador to Cameroon was a significant step in bringing international attention to the plight of the Lebang people. By listening to their stories and promising to take their experiences back with him, the Ambassador has helped to amplify their voices and raise awareness of the ongoing crisis.
However, much more needs to be done to support the Lebang community and other displaced communities in Cameroon. Humanitarian aid, development assistance, and a concerted effort to address the root causes of the conflict are all essential to helping these communities rebuild their lives and regain their dignity.
Join us in supporting the Lebang community and honoring their strength and resilience as they navigate these challenging times. Together, we can work to create a more just and equitable future for all the people of Cameroon.
